West Ham United looked set to bring Maxi Gomez to the Premier League from La Liga outfit Celta Vigo during the January transfer window.
West Ham United’s long-awaited move for Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez has collapsed on transfer deadline day, according to TEAMtalk.
The Hammers have been linked with a whole host of centre-forwards this month and it seemed that Gomez had emerged as the club’s number one target, perhaps with a view to replacing Marko Arnautovic at the London Stadium.
Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that West Ham were closing in on a £40 million deal for the 22-year-old. Gomez was expected to be loaned back to relegation threatened Celta for the rest of the season before heading to England in the summer.
But, in a massive blow to their plans, TEAMtalk are now claiming that Gomez might not be arriving after all.
It is understood that West Ham have been put off by the striker’s wage demands, which could see Manuel Pellegrini’s side focus their attention on alternative targets. On the upside, Michy Batshuayi has agreed to join the club in principle on loan from London rivals Chelsea, according to Sky Sports.
Gomez, however, is one of Europe’s most promising and natural goalscorers, having hit the net 26 times in 42 starts since arriving in La Liga from Uruguayan football in 2017.
