Everton are reportedly considering a move for West Ham’s Andy Carroll – and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s eyes should light up.
Everton need a centre-forward. Their impressive array of playmakers need a goalscorer to put away the chances they create. And the Toffees need a presence in attack to replace the power and physique of Romelu Lukaku.
And West Ham United’s ponytailed battering ram Andy Carroll ticks every box. According to The Sun, Everton manager Ronald Koeman has placed the Geordie goalscorer at the top of his list to replace Lukaku with a £20 million bid planned to give the former Liverpool flop a second stab at making his mark on Merseyside.
The report suggests that West Ham may be willing to consider offers for a player who has just 18 months remaining on his £110,000-a-week deal. And, while Carroll’s unenviable injury record is the obvious warning to any club wishing to pay big for his services, it seems that a fit Carroll is exactly the kind of player Everton are missing right now.
And one player in Koeman’s squad who would surely relish his arrival more than most is Gylfi Sigurdsson. Sigurdsson is yet to make an impact at Goodison Park since arriving for a club-record £45 million from Swansea City in the summer
The Icelandic international is at his best when partnered with an old-school targetman – like Wilfried Bony and particularly Fernando Llorente, the 6ft 4ins Spaniard thriving on Sigurdsson’s famed dead-ball delivery.
With Wayne Rooney or the diminutive Sandro Ramirez leading the line for Everton these days, Sigurdsson’s most useful asset isn’t being utilised. However, his eyes would surely light up with the presence of a 6ft 3ins targetman like Carroll loitering at the back post.
If Everton want to get the best out of Sigurdsson, they may have to add another £20 million to their already big transfer spending.
