Tottenham Hotspur reportedly want to bring Celta Vigo’s La Liga ace to the Premier League, three months after West Ham United failed with a £26.75m bid.
It seems that many teams in the Premier League need a prolific centre-forward right now, and Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are no different.
Spurs’ over-reliance on Harry Kane shows no sign of ending, with Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente failing to provide any sort of competition for a starting berth, while West Ham have been forced to endure yet more injuries to Andy Carroll, not to mention Javier Hernandez’s inconsistent form.
So the Hammers would be understandably frustrated if Maxi Gomez ended up a few miles away in Tottenham colours.
According to El Pais, the 22-year-old Uruguayan international is on the radar of Mauricio Pochettino’s side after scoring six goals in nine La Liga starts this season for Celta Vigo. Gomez is on track to match his tally of 17 from 2017/18.
Just three months ago, Galician radio station Radio Galega claimed that West Ham had seen a £26.75 million bid rejected for Gomez. Celta wanted closer to £44.5 million – the striker’s release clause – and that proved a little steep for a Hammers side that had already spent over £100 million during the summer.
Gomez is a powerful, old school centre-forward who thrives in the penalty area. In short, he looks a perfect fit for Premier League football.
Should he move to Tottenham and continue that purple patch, West Ham will be wondering why they did not put more money aside for a prolific centre-forward.
