West Ham United reportedly want Wout Weghorst from AZ Alkmaar, the Eredivisie club Premier League rivals Spurs signed Vincent Janssen from

The last AZ Alkmaar striker to seal a big-money move to England didn’t exactly set the world alight.

Vincent Janssen was the Eredivisie’s reigning Golden Boot winner when he arrived at Tottenham in the summer of 2016 for £18.6 million. By the end of his debut season in North London, however, Janssen had certainly sealed his place alongside Roberto Soldado, Helder Postiga and co on the list of Tottenham’s striker flops.

The Dutchman managed just six goals in 35 games, scoring just once from open play in the Premier League, and quickly became a tortured presence, weighed down by his own failures not to mention his hefty price-tag.

Janssen spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce and his Tottenham career looks over already.

So maybe London rivals West Ham should keep this in mind as they express an interest in AZ’s current goal-machine Wout Weghorst, according to RTV Oost. Like Janssen, Weghorst scored for fun at AZ and could earn himself a move to England.

The comparisons, however, are inevitable. Like Janssen, the 6ft 6ins Weghorst is a physical targetman who perhaps lacks the mobility and real dead-eyed clinical streak to step up to the Premier League level. And it is worth noting that Weghorst scored 18 goals last season, nine less than Janssen managed prior to his move to Spurs.

Weghorst, to his credit, appears a stronger personality and a more aggressive striker as a whole. but Janssen’s famed failure means there will be plenty of cynics should he pull on the claret and blue strip this summer.
