West Ham United have a challenge on their hands if they want to bring Andres Pereira to the London Stadium.

Acceding to The Mirror (16 December, page 49), The Hammers are keen to land Manchester United’s long-serving benchwarmer in the January transfer window, taking advantage of the fact that Pereira has rejected the chance to extend his contract with the Old Trafford giants.

But according to A Tribuna, West Ham are facing competition for the Brazilian’s signature by none other than his boyhood club.

“He is a player that interests us a lot. He is a santista and wants to play for Santos,” president Jose Carlos Peres said. “The family is trying. His father wants to see him at Santos for at least a year.

“We want the player now. I’ve been speaking with his father.”

Now, usually the prospect of playing Premier League football would appeal more than a spell in the Brazilian Serie A.

But this is not an ordinary situation with Pereira telling Globo Esporte back in the Autumn that he dreams of pulling on the black and white stripes of Santos, admitting that he’d happily play for them for free.

West Ham, however, can offer the Belgium-born 22-year-old the chance to play regular Premier League football for the first time in his career, having never really managed to make a breakthrough at Manchester United.
