West Ham United failed to get the dynamic central midfielder David Moyes was hoping for during the January transfer window so it makes sense that they would be drawing up plans early for the summer.

According to Spanish daily AS, The Hammers are lining up an ambitious swoop to bring Barcelona’s Andre Gomes to The London Stadium.

Gomes has struggled at the Camp Nou since his move from Valencia but is a Portuguese international, a soon-to-be La Liga champion and was so impressive at the Mestalla that Barca paid £31 million for him less than two years ago, per the BBC.

Signing Gomes would be something of a coup and demonstrate some much-needed ambition at boardroom level. After all, he would probably command a club-record fee with Barca hoping to recoup as much of their investment as possible.

Big name or cheap alternative?

But dropping Gomes in favour of a 22-year-old Hibernian midfielder by the name of John McGinn would surely give the frustrated fans more ammunition against their under-fire owners.

McGinn is a very talented player and has been one of the best midfielders in Scotland’s top flight this season, with Moyes a firm admirer of the youngster, having targeted him when he was Sunderland manager.

Per the Daily Record, assistant manager Billy McKinlay watched McGinn in action at the weekend with West Ham possibly hoping of a cut-price deal for a £5 million rated talent who’s out of contract in a year.

Signing McGinn over Gomes, however, would be a little underwhelming and perhaps viewed as a cheap option.

With owners Sullivan and Gold under real pressure from the Hammers supporters, they need to make a statement and signing McGinn would perhaps give out the wrong impression.
