You would probably struggle to find two people who agree on Alex Song.
The midfielder is a player of immense natural ability who shone at Arsenal and even earned a move to Barcelona.
But the fact that he is a free agent at the age of 30, and has been linked with a move to Serie A’s bottom side Benevento by the Sun, makes it pretty clear that not everything has been on song for Alex.
So it should be no surprise to learn that West Ham fans are divided by the prospect of Song returning to the capital on a free transfer.
Hammers boss David Moyes spent the January window searching high and low for a combative midfielder but he failed in that regard. So the news that Pedro Obiang will be out for the rest of the season has some fans clamouring for the club to delve into the free-agent market once more.
Song certainly stands out as a potentially inspired addition. The 49-capped Cameroon international spent two years on loan at West Ham from Barcelona and produced a number of exceptional midfield performances in his first season, before struggling to make the same impact the following campaign.
But would he be a brilliant bargain, adding experience and much-needed depth like Patrice Evra? Or a cheap last-resort and a reflection of West Ham’s transfer market failures – like Patrice Evra?
