Midland rivals West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly competing for Fenerbahce’s Josef de Souza.

This time last year, Wolverhampton Wanderers were set for another season in the Championship while West Bromwich Albion were hoping to build on a terrific top-half finish in the Premier League.

12 months on, however, and these local rivals have swapped places in dramatic fashion. Wolves are returning to the top flight after cruising to the Championship crown with 99 points while West Brom mustered just 31 and finished bottom of the Premier League.

With these two Midland neighbours seemingly going head-to-head to sign Fenerbahce midfielder Josef de Souza this summer, Wolves surely have the upper hand.

West Brom came so close to signing the three-time Brazil international last summer and, according to A Spor, have made another bid of £10.6 million to finally bring de Souza to The Hawthorns.

But Takvim report that Wolves are interested too and are plotting an offer of their own.

And considering that Wolves can offer Premier League football and a place in one of Europe’s most ambitious and exciting projects it should, on paper, appeal more than the chance to play against Ipswich Town, Brentford and co in the second tier.

But West Brom fans should not lose hope just yet. Ironically, the reason de Souza got cold feet about a move to The Hawthorns last year could give Darren Moore’s side the advantage this time.

Speaking to Turkish Football, de Souza admitted he was worried about his lack of game time but the 30-year-old would surely be a starter now with James Morrison and Claudio Yacob out of contract, Gareth Barry past his best and Grzegorz Krychowiak gone.

If it is first-team football de Souza wants, West Brom is a better option than Wolves.
