Fulham’s Premier League outcast McDonald has been linked with Rangers and West Bromwich Albion this month.
Reports from Football London at the start of January claiming that Rangers had entered talks with Fulham about the signing of Kevin McDonald always seemed a little odd.
It does not take a tactical expert to tell you that the centre of midfield is arguably the strongest area of Rangers’ squad with the likes of Jordan Rossiter and Graham Dorrans barely kicking a ball this season and Greg Docherty shining on loan at Shrewsbury Town.
And, since McDonald was linked, Rangers have signed Steven Davis and Glen Kamara. Not that this ended Steven Gerrard’s pursuit of further midfielders, as reported by the Daily Record.
But, with McDonald struggling for game time under Claudio Ranieri at Fulham, joining a club where he would be far from guaranteed first-team football would exactly make a lot of sense.
West Bromwich Albion, in contrast, could be a far better move for a 30-year-old who is perhaps unfortunate to have slipped down the pecking order at Craven Cottage.
The Telegraph claims on Friday that the Baggies are keen to take McDonald to The Hawthorns and a player of his experience and quality could be crucial as Darren Moore’s side aim for promotion.
On paper, the former Sheffield United man would walk into West Brom’s starting XI with Moore lacking depth the engine room. McDonald was fantastic as Fulham earned promotion last season and it is not hard to believe he could repeat the feat at West Brom.
