Do West Brom have best chance yet to land Sam Johnstone?

West Bromwich Albion reportedly want to sign goalkeeper Sam Johnstone from Premier League giants Manchester United.

With Ben Foster expected to bid farewell to West Bromwich Albion this summer, Baggies boss Darren Moore faces a big challenge replacing the club’s number one of six years.

But the Mail claims that they have found their man already and, like Foster, he would arrive at The Hawthorns with Manchester United’s seal of approval.

It is understood that West Brom have identified Sam Johnstone as the perfect replacement for Foster, who is in talks over a return to the Premier League with Watford. The 24-year-old is in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and has no plans to renew, meaning United may be forced to sell amid claims they have slapped a £5 million price-tag on his head.

This is not the first time West Brom have been linked with Johnstone (they allegedly wanted him in January, too) but The Baggies have never had a better chance to get their man.

Back at the turn of the year, Johnstone was still on loan at Midland rivals Aston Villa and their manager, Steve Bruce, had spoken openly about his desire to keep Johnstone at Villa Park.

Since then, however, Villa have lost the play-off final and been plunged into a financial nightmare. They only wish they could afford £5 million now.

The Mail adds that West Ham United have also been interested but have now signed Lukas Fabianski from Swansea instead. If they are to sign another new goalkeeper this summer, expect him to be a much bigger name than Johnstone.

So the door is definitely open for West Brom to land arguably the best goalkeeper from the 2017/18 Championship season.
