West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest could hardly be closer in the Championship table right now.

There are just two points and two places separating the Baggies and Forest in fifth and seventh respectively, and both sides will be under no illusions that the January transfer window could be absolutely key to their promotion hopes.

With Nottingham Forest’s summer target apparently on his way to West Brom, the second half of the Championship campaign could bring up a rather intriguing subplot.

The Sun (31 August, live blog) claimed that Forest were hoping to sign the out-of-favour Leicester City midfielder Andy King but failed to get a deal over the line before the window slammed shut.

Five months later, however, the Mail is claiming that Wales international King is a target for West Brom with manager Darren Moore believing he is the perfect box-to-box midfielder for the Midland giants.

King has not played a single second of Championship football for Leicester all season, so it would be no surprise if he wanted to leave at the earliest opportunity after a decade of loyal service.

The 30-year-old has history when it comes to succeeding in the second tier, having helped fire Leicester to the title in 2014. If he can repeat the feat at West Brom, Nottingham Forest will be left wondering what might have been.
