West Bromwich Albion reportedly want Luke Freeman from Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers, as well as Rangers’ Josh Windass.
Josh Windass might have enjoyed his most prolific ever season in 2017/18, scoring 18 goals from midfield, but the constant criticism he receives from some sections of the Rangers support suggest that the numbers should not be taken at face value.
Yes, Windass is a decent source of goals but question marks still remain about his best position, his work rate or even his ability to influence a game beyond the odd moment of stand-out quality.
West Brom, then, should take this into consideration as The Mail (live blog, 1.20pm) states that they are one of four English clubs keen on signing the £3 million-rated 24-year-old from Scottish Premiership giants Rangers before the window slams shut. Maybe Windass is not the only new midfielder they need this summer.
If they want a midfielder capable of adding class and creativity in the centre of the park, Queens Park Rangers’ Luke Freeman is the right man for the job.
According to The Mirror (29 July, page 74) West Brom are chasing the former Arsenal youngster who, interestingly, is valued at the same price as Windass. But it doesn’t have to be a case of one or the other?
Freeman is a wide player by trade whereas Windass is arguably at his best playing through the middle. There is room for both in Darren Moore’s side and a £6 million double-deal wouldn’t break the bank. Freeman and Windass have the talent to compliment each other nicely too.
Freeman might have scored just five league goals last season to Windass’ 13 but he is more of a creator, a dead-ball specialist who set up 13 goals in 2017/18 for QPR. In addition to Windass, Freeman could add the game-changing quality that The Baggies’ current squad is lacking.
