Do Wenger’s recent decisions mean Joel Campbell must stay at Arsenal?

Joel Campbell may be needed as back-up at Arsenal following the departures of two of his fellow forwards.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Arsenal will decide by Wednesday whether or not to loan Joel Campbell to Spanish side Real Sociedad.

The report claims that David Moyes wants the Costa Rica international either on loan or in a permanent deal, with the likes of Benfica, West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City also linked.

But following the loan departures of Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo to Inter Milan and Crystal Palace respectively, has Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger already had the decision made for him?

After all, despite the presence of Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez at the Emirates Stadium, the club would be wise to have contingency plans in place should they be struck by the injuries and suspensions that often occur at the business-end of the season.

For now Campbell is very much on the periphery, but Wenger has seen what an injury crisis can do to his first-team after his defence was decimated earlier in the campaign, and having waved goodbye to two forwards already this month, would he really allow a third to depart?

Campbell has not had the season many expected following his return from his loan spell in Greece, but he has still made 10 appearances in all competitions and he could be vital if any of Arsenal’s senior forwards are unavailable in 2015.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Campbell, but it could be that the decisions Wenger has already made directly influence one he is about to.
