Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard looks set to take over at Ibrox but why didn’t Scottish Premiership giants Rangers look at Chelsea U18 coach Jody Morris?

Steven Gerrard has only had one year with Liverpool’s U18s under his belt but he already appears to be on the verge of one of the biggest jobs in British football.
But Rangers are a mess on and off the field right now so the appointment of a 37-year-old with absolutely no experience at the top level, let alone at a basket case of a club like The Gers, seems like a major risk.

And you could make the argument that Rangers haven’t even gone for the right U18 coach.
After all, while Gerrard has impressed in his limited spell with Liverpool’s youth, Jody Morris has been sweeping all before him at Chelsea.
Under the 39-year-old former Blues midfielder, Chelsea have won the FA Youth Cup for a fifth successive time, beating Arsenal 7-1 over two legs. No team has ever achieved that feat since the famous Busby Babes of Manchester United back in the 1950s.

Morris has helped turn Chelsea’s youngsters into winning machines and by far and away the country’s best team at U18 level. They are one win away from a quadruple this season.
So have Rangers simply gone for a big name in Gerrard rather than a man with the credentials that really matter?
