Wolverhampton Wanderers could take the Premier League by storm and are targeting Stoke City’s Jack Butland and Sporting Lisbon’s Rui Patricio.

The sky is the limit for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

With bottomless funds provided by their billionaire Chinese owners, and connections to Jorge Mendes giving the club access to a whole new level of transfer targets, Wolves appear to be a club with a blank canvass who can go as far as they want.

In an interview on the club’s official website, sporting director Kevin Thelwell stated that Wolves’ aims for next season are not simply survival. The Championship winners, in their first top flight campaign for six years, want to push on and establish themselves as a top half club as soon as possible.

And breaking the world record for a goalkeeping transfer would be one surefire way to show that Wolves mean business.

As it stands, the most expensive goalkeeper in footballing history is Ederson, who Manchester City bought for £35 million last summer from Benfica. But early reports ahead of the summer window suggest that Wolves could be willing to pay even more for a new number one.

The Express stated that they were keen to sign Stoke City’s Jack Butland for £35 million, though current Potters boss Paul Lambert believes it would take far more than that to convince the club to sell. Wolves, however, would probably have no trouble raising their offer.

Jack Butland of Stoke City punches the ball out during the Premier League match between Stoke City and Arsenal at Bet365 Stadium on August 19, 2017 in Stoke on Trent, England.

They are also keen on Sporting Lisbon’s Portuguese ace Rui Patricio, who has a release clause of around £40 million (A Bola, front page, 9th May).

If Wolves show they can pull off one of these money-spinning deals, a top half Premier League finish could be the least of their ambitions.
