There appears to be no place at Championship side Leeds United for Marcus Antonsson, despite a decent loan spell at League One Blackburn Rovers.

Leeds United’s forgotten man Marcus Antonsson has restored his reputation somewhat during a loan spell at League One high-flyers Blackburn Rovers this season.

The Swedish striker, who Leeds signed from Kalmar FF for £2 million in the summer of 2016, has netted eight times for Tony Mowbray’s Rovers this season to help the Lancashire club fight for promotion from the third tier.

So ironically, rather than offer him a fresh start in the first-team on the back of a decent loan spell, maybe Antonsson’s form at Ewood Park should be the catalyst for Leeds to sell him in the summer.

After all, the striker is out of contract in the summer of 2019, so Leeds realistically have one transfer window in which they could hope to claw back at least some of their £2 million investment.

Antonsson has done well at Blackburn but, in truth, probably not well enough to suggest that he could score goals at a reliable enough rate in the Championship next season.

And, according to Gazzamercato, Leeds have already set aside £4.4 million to sign Carpi forward Jerry Mbakogu at the end of the season, meaning Antonsson is likely to still find himself someway down the pecking order even with a new manager at the helm in Paul Heckingbottom.

It is unlikely that Leeds could make back their £2 million so surely it is better to sell Antonsson for something, rather than lose him on a free 12 months later.
