West Ham United are looking within the Premier League for centre-backs and Moyes reportedly likes Swansea City’s Mawson and West Brom’s Evans.

You would think Jonny Evans’ reputation might have taken a hit after a season in which his West Brom side are stumbling out of the Premier League, bottom of the table for almost all of 2018.

But the former Manchester United defender is still a man in demand this summer, although that might have something to do with the relegation clause in his contract which means Evans will be available for just £3 million.

The Mirror reports that West Ham United will make a move for the Northern Ireland skipper when the Baggies’ relegation is confirmed. Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Leicester City and Everton are also interested.

And, although Evans has not had the most successful season of a career which includes Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy, he would be one of the bargains of the summer.

Particularly when you consider that another defender linked with West Ham would cost about £37 million more.

The Daily Star claimed that David Moyes is a big fan of Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson. The 24-year-old is a big talent, a commanding and powerful centre-back who is also very good with the ball at his feet. He did not recently win an England call-up for nothing.

But, even in today’s market, £40 million is obscene for a player who, while gifted, has a lot to do to prove that he is a top level centre-back.

Evans, however, has been there, done it and has far more experience than Mawson. And, at around a tenth of the price, it is clear who should be West Ham’s number one target.
