Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion were reportedly willing to loan Sam Field out to Scottish Premiership powerhouses Rangers.

West Bromwich Albion were so desperate to sign Rangers right-back James Tavernier that they were willing to let Sam Field move to Ibrox on loan to sweeten the deal, according to The Guardian (live blog, 11:11am).

The deal didn’t happen of course – and maybe for the best, because West Brom fans soon took to Twitter to express their fury about the possibility of Field being allowed to depart the Hawthorns, even on just a temporary basis.

Now, the 20-year-old is clearly a big talent. In fact, former Baggies boss Tony Pulis said in 2016; “Technically, he’s as good and as gifted as any footballer I’ve seen at that age.”

And Field’s display in West Brom’s 1-0 EFL Cup win against Luton Town on Tuesday suggests that he could have been the man to solve Rangers’ biggest problem position.

The Gers have spent all summer looking for a new left-sided centre-back with Curtis Tilt, Marcus Beevers and Jake Cooper all linked yet nowhere to be seen at Ibrox. And, would you believe it, Field was given a start in an unfamiliar role against Luton – left-sided centre-back.

It worked too. Field was a revelation in West Brom’s back three, timing his challenges to perfection and displaying his intelligent distribution from the back.

As luck would have it, Field now looks like exactly the signing that Rangers were looking for. But have they missed their chance to sign him on loan?
