Rangers have reportedly made a bid to bring Kyle Lafferty back to Ibrox from Scottish Premiership rivals Hearts.
Well, nobody saw this coming.
It had been reported that Steven Gerrard was hoping to bring one more striker to Rangers before the transfer window slams shut, but few expected that former Ibrox ace Kyle Lafferty would be at the top of his wish list.
According to STV, Rangers have seen a £200,000 bid rejected by Hearts to sign the 30-year-old who left the club in controversial circumstances; jumping ship after they were demoted to the fourth tier back in 2012.
Rangers fans will understandably be divided by the prospect of re-signing Lafferty, a player who showed promise if not consistency during his first spell in Glasgow. But, should this most unexpected deal happen, would it be more a masterstroke than madness?
Although frequently a talisman for Northern Ireland, Lafferty’s record at club level had left something to be desired, until he returned to Scotland with Hearts last summer.
Lafferty netted 19 goals in all competitions last season, including a stunning free-kick against Rangers in April which showed his former club just what they are missing. He is a player with not only real game-changing qualities but experience; something Alfredo Morelos and certainly Umar Sadiq cannot provide.
He would also allow Rangers to play more direct if they wanted and, barring that old six-year grudge that some fans will still hold, there are not many reasons to suggest that re-signing Lafferty is a bad idea.
