Leeds United reportedly wanted to bring Hannover striker Charlison Benschop to the Championship in the January 2018 transfer window.

There were plenty of eyebrows raised when Leeds United were linked with a shock move for Charlison Benschop in January 2019. Not just because the striker was hardly a household name, but because his goal-scoring record is more Jay-Roy Grot than Kemar Roofe.

According to Voetbal Primeur, Leeds were keen on a cut-price deal for Benschop with his contract at Hannover due to expire later in the year. Fortuna Dusseldorf and Yokahoma City were also understood to be interested in the Curacao international.

Needless to say, Benschop didn’t arrive at Elland Road and maybe that is for the best. Because, 13 months on, the 29-year-old has hardly shown the sort of form that would have justified a move to Elland Road.

Benschop has played just 16 games for club and country since those links emerged on January 10 2018. And how many goals has he managed in that time? One – his single strike coming in the German second division for Ingolstadt against Erzegbirge.

The former Dutch U21 international returned to Holland last month, joining De Graafschap on loan but he has hardly made a positive impression. He is yet to come close to a goal in three games for the Eredivisie outfit.

So if Leeds’ interest seemed strange a year ago, it looks even odder now.
