Erik Lamela may be concerned by reports that Premier League giants Spurs are targeting Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus.
Erik Lamela has not got back to his absolute best yet since returning from over a year on the sidelines but the signs are good.
The Argentine attacker has now made 20 first-team appearances for Spurs this season, with his skill, vision and commendable work rate providing a fine reminder of why he is so highly valued by Mauricio Pochettino.
Lamela’s two assists in the 6-1 FA Cup thrashing of Rochdale on Wednesday also showcased an ability to open up a packed defence with a moment of inspiration – a trait that comes in handy when you play for a dynamic attacking side like Spurs.
But if Pochettino’s nearly men are to really kick on and establish themselves at the top of the English and European game they need to be ruthless, and whether this means sacrificing a crowd favourite like Lamela for someone a little better, so be it.
The Spurs boss has heightened speculation over a move for Napoli winger and 2015 target Jose Callejon when telling Calciomercato that he has continued to follow the Spaniard’s career. The former Real Madrid ace, who has eight Serie A goals for table-topping Napoli, is one of Europe’s most underrated attackers.
And The Mail claims that Spurs are planning an audacious bid for Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus, a player who, despite so many injuries throughout his career, remains a genuinely world class attacking talent.
Reus’ contract runs out in 2019 and the German international will weigh up Dortmund’s ambition before deciding on his future.
And, with all due respect to Lamela, Reus and Callejon are both significant upgrades who would immediately take his place on the right of Spurs’ attack.
