Sunderland need a new goalkeeper as they prepare for life in League One after finishing bottom of the Championship.

Would Sunderland have avoided successive relegations by keeping hold of Vito Mannone?

The Black Cats sold the Italian goalkeeper to Reading last summer for just £2 million and then proceeded to bring in three so-called ‘shot-stoppers’ who all flopped spectacularly at the Stadium of Light.

Neither Robbin Ruiter, Jason Steele or Lee Camp (below) proved to be anything like an astute signing, costing the Black Cats goals and points aplenty as they finished bottom of the Championship and drifted into League One.

So, understandably, a new number one is a priority this summer and, after the debacle of 2017/18, Sunderland simply need to get the right man on board.

But a 31-year-old from the second tier of Scottish football is hardly likely to have fans looking towards next season with much optimism.

According to the Sun, Sunderland are looking at Dunfermline’s Lee Robinson, who ended last season fourth in the Scottish Championship.

The 5ft 11ins glovesman, who has had two spells at Rangers, is a talented stopper who has gained some degree of notoriety on Instagram with 100,000 keen followers tuning in as he posts videos of himself pulling of superb saves.

Although Sunderland supporters could be forgiven for reserving their excitement just yet. With money tight and League One football beckoning, it may be difficult to lure players to Wearside this summer and links with Robinson perhaps reflect just how far this club has fallen.
