Rangers needed left-wingers at Ibrox and they have already raided Brighton and Hove Albion; now they could make a move on Premier League rivals Burnley.
Rangers went into the winter transfer market with a left winger top of their list of priorities.
And the month could hardly have started any worse when Lewis Morgan, the St Mirren starlet Rangers had hoped to bring back to Ibrox three years after they released him, agreed a deal to join Old Firm enemies Celtic instead.
Shortly after, it became clear that Jamie Walker had gone off the idea of swapping Hearts for the Gers. Rangers had three bids rejected for the 22-year-old in the summer and, with Walker seemingly unhappy that they were reluctant to meet his £1 million price-tag, he instead headed off to join Wigan Athletic.
Although while there have been a few missteps, the January window could still prove to be a real success for Graeme Murty and under-pressure director of football Mark Allen.
Murphy should fill the void on the left of Rangers’ attack now he has completed his much-anticipated move from Brighton. Murphy, who has joined on loan with an obligation to buy, is one of the most eye-catching and high-profile signings the club has made in many a year.
The 29-year-old has just a few months left on his contract at Premier League high-flyers Burnley, for whom he has started the last seven games. West Ham and Crystal Palace are keen but Rangers are understood to also be in the race.
So even though a deal is far from done as things stand, Rangers deserve a great deal of credit for bouncing back from the failures of Morgan and Walker to secure one Premier League player and trying for another.
