Scottish Premiership giants Celtic are interested in VVV-Venlo hitman Lennart Thy again – but what about AZ Alkmaar’s Dutch international Wout Weghorst?

It seems that Brendan Rodgers might have his eyes on a player Ronny Deila tried to bring to Celtic three years ago.

According to German publication 90min.de, Celtic sent scouts to watch Lennart Thy in action for VVV-Venlo in the goalless Eredivisie draw with FC Twente at the weekend.

The 26-year-old has impressed in Holland on loan from Werder Bremen with seven league goals – and this is not the first time he has been linked with a move to Parkhead. The Daily Record claimed that Celtic were keen to sign Thy during Deila’s reign, back in January 2016.

But if there is one Eredivisie striker that Celtic should be renewing their interest in this summer, it is a man the Hoops were considering paying £2 million for in that very same mid-season transfer window.

According to the Scotsman, Celtic were hot on the trail of the aggressive Heracles frontman Wout Weghorst at the time. And, since then, he has gone from strength to strength in the Dutch top flight.

Weghorst netted 17 times in a prolific debut campaign for AZ Alkmaar last season and is on track to fight for the Golden Boot this. The 25-year-old has 13 goals in 27 games and was rewarded with a long-awaited Holland debut in the recent 1-0 defeat to England in Amsterdam.

Weghorst is an old-fashioned, physical centre-forward who could give Celtic another option to the more cerebral Griffiths and the skilful Edouard and Dembele. And his goals tally is on another level to Lennart Thy.
