Hibernian midfielders Dylan McGeoch and John McGinn have both been linked with Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers.

Dave King promised to back Steven Gerrard in the transfer market this summer, but it still seems that finances might be holding Rangers back.

While links with the likes of Jermain Defoe, Kyle Bartley and Lucas Leiva added to the optimism around Ibrox, reports from Sky Sports that Rangers failed to sign Martin Skrtel because they couldn’t afford his wages have brought fans back down to earth with a bump.

And reports in the Scottish Sun that Rangers are interested in signing Hibernian’s Dylan McGeouch could be taken in one of two ways.

On one hand, McGeouch was one of the standout midfielders in the top flight last season, helping Hibs finish fourth in their first season after promotion while earning a well-deserved Scotland debut to boot.

On the other, the 25-year-old could be seen as a cheap alternative to his Hibs midfield partner John McGinn. After all, while McGinn would cost a hefty £3 million, according to the Scottish Sun, McGeouch will be absolutely free once his contract expires at the end of the month.

The Daily Record reported that Rangers were keen to bring McGinn to Ibrox in an expensive and hugely ambitious move.

And while McGeouch has arguably been equally impressive over the last nine months or so, it is tempting to wonder whether Rangers have simply turned their attention to him because he is cheaper than his team-mate.
