Reports are claiming that League One Sunderland are set to sign Greg Docherty from Scottish Premiership powerhouses Rangers.

On paper, Rangers have absolutely aced the transfer market since hiring Steven Gerrard as their new manager.

The former Liverpool captain has worked with director of football Mark Allen to bring in a whole host of signings, including Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield, Connor Goldson, Jamie Murphy and Umar Sadiq, that serve to make Rangers’ squad look far stronger than it did this time a year ago.

Gerrard has had to be tough too, getting rid of Bruno Alves, Michael O’Halloran and Harry Forrester. Though, in truth, none of the aforementioned trio did enough to warrant starting the 2018/19 campaign at Ibrox.

But while it was little surprise to see Alves, O’Halloran and Forrester go, few expected Rangers to get rid of Greg Docherty just six months after they worked for so long to sign him from Hamilton Academical for around £700,000.

According to the Scottish Sun, Sunderland manager Jack Ross wants to bring the energetic 21-year-old to the Stadium of Light. And it is understood that Gerrard is willing to let him leave Ibrox, albeit only on loan.

But is the 37-year-old making his first real mistake as Rangers manager? Docherty might have fallen down the pecking order after the arrivals of Arfield, Ovie Ejaria and Lassana Coulibaly but, unlike the latter two, he has proven himself in Scotland’s top flight.

The 22-year-old impressed too when given a chance by Rangers last season and, with the Glasgow giants needing to combine domestic and European exploits, his boundless energy could have come in very handy.
