If Allan McGregor returns to Ibrox from Hull City, Scottish Premiership giants Rangers will have three goalkeepers fighting for one place.

Jak Alnwick of Rangers arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Cup Semi Final match between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden Park on April 15, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

In the last 13 months, Jak Alnwick has made just two Scottish Premiership appearances between the sticks for Rangers, and half of those were because regular number one Wes Foderingham was injured.

So you can hardly blame the £250,000 former Port Vale goalkeeper for wanting to leave Rangers this summer in search of more regular first-team football, as reported by the Express.

It is expected that Allan McGregor will return to Ibrox this summer from Hull City while Foderingham wants to stay, according to the Scottish Sun, meaning that Alnwick’s chances of becoming Rangers’ number one will be slimmer than ever.

Jak Alnwick of Rangers saves from Conor Sammon of Partick Thistle during the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

But would the former Newcastle United youngster be better off biding his time at Ibrox instead?

After all, McGregor is 36 these days and, although those excellent reflexes remain, he simply cannot go on forever. His signing will be a short-term fix, albeit a very popular one.

And Foderingham, while impressive with the ball at his feet, is not the most consistent shot-stopper and has his fair share of critics among the Rangers support. There is every chance a new manager, rumoured to be Steven Gerrard, may not be keen on the former Swindon Town man.

The Scottish Sun add that Foderingham has admirers at Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest.

So Alnwick might be better served fighting for his place. Graeme Murty might not be a big fan but Rangers’ next manager could be.
