Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers want a goalkeeper with Stoke City’s Jack Butland and Southampton’s Alex McCarthy in demand.

Alex McCarthy of Southampton celebrates his side's first goal during the Premier League match between Burnley and Southampton at Turf Moor on February 24, 2018 in Burnley, England.

If Southampton pull off a great escape and survive in the Premier League this season, fans will look back on Dusan Tadic’s match-winning brace in the 2-1 win against south coast rivals Bournemouth on Saturday.

But Alex McCarthy played his part too. The goalkeeper made two sensational saves at the death as The Saints secured a vital result which keeps their hopes of avoiding relegation alive.

McCarthy has enjoyed a superb run of form this season, taking Fraser Forster’s place between the sticks and starting regular league games for the first time since his spell at Reading back in 2013/14.

Alex McCarthy of Southampton makes a save during the The Emirates FA Cup Semi Final match between Chelsea and Southampton at Wembley Stadium on April 22, 2018 in London, England.

And, according to The Mirror (live transfer blog, 8.59am), the 28-year-old’s displays have caught the attention of newly-promoted moneybags Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It is understood that Wolves want a new shot-stopper this summer despite current number one John Ruddy winning the Championship’s Golden Glove. And it is interesting to note that their links with McCarthy have arisen just a day after it emerged that deal to sign Jack Butland could prove to be more expensive than they thought.

Jack Butland of Stoke City makes a save during the Premier League match between Manchester United and Stoke City at Old Trafford on January 15, 2018 in Manchester, England.

The Express stated that Wolves were willing to offer £35 million for the Stoke City talismanonly for Potters manager Paul Lambert to claim that fee would only get the Black Country club ‘one glove’ in today’s market.

Butland could be too expensive, even for a Wolves side with billionaire Chinese owners. Just because they have money to burn doesn’t mean they don’t have an appreciation of value.

So, pound for pound, McCarthy could be the more astute addition.
