Premier League giants Spurs are reportedly keen on Porto’s Mexico star Hector Herrera, as are La Liga powerhouses Real Madrid.
A move to Tottenham Hotspur could suddenly look a little less tempting once you have an offer on the table from Real Madrid. And even the most ardent Spurs supporter could forgive Hector Herrera for choosing the Bernabau over North London.
According to Calciomercato, Tottenham are interested in signing Porto’s title winning captain. But Real Madrid were also impressed by Herrera’s terrific displays for Mexico at the World Cup, according to AS.
Julen Lopetegui, Real’s new manager, was Herrera’s coach at Porto in 2014/15 and it is claimed that they met up recently with the midfielder’s future coming under increasing scrutiny.
But, looking beyond the glamour and history of Real, you could certainly argue that Tottenham would be a better move for a 28-year-old who is due to be a free agent next summer.
Herrera, who Porto value at £18 million, is an indispensable part of Sergio Conceicao’s starting XI at the Dragao but the chances are that he would be warming the bench more often than not at Real. If Luka Modric stays, which looks likely with Madrid reluctant to sell, Herrera is unlikely to force his way into the team ahead of the Croatian, never mind Toni Kroos or Casemiro.
At Tottenham, however, this all-round enforcer could be a key man – potentially the long-term successor for Mousa Dembele in Mauricio Pochettino’s engine room.
Heading into his prime, Herrera should be playing regular football in a major European league and he’d be far more likely to get exactly that at Tottenham.
