David Bates will leave Ibrox in the summer as things stand, with his contract at Scottish Premiership giants Rangers set to expire.

Will David Bates ever play for Rangers again?

It has been well documented that the 21-year-old centre-back is out of contract at the end of this season and, so far, there has been no movement on a new deal.

Bates has arguably been Rangers’ standout centre-half since the turn of the year, outperforming the experienced internationals Russel Martin and Bruno Alves, but Rangers have not yet managed to tie him down.

And the latest report from the Scottish Sun suggests that talks have stalled between the Glasgow giants and the former Ross County youngster.

Coupled with Graeme Murty’s admission that Bates will miss a minimum of six weeks after suffering ankle ligament damage in the opening stages of the Old Firm defeat to Celtic on Sunday, and you wonder whether the talented prospect will be seen in Rangers’ Royal Blue again.

So even if Bates manages to return as early as possible, the season would be drawing to a close. And, who knows, by that time Murty might have settled on a new defensive partnership with the fellow youngster Ross McCrorie set to return in the very near future.

As of yet, however, there has only been one team credited with an interest in Bates, a Sunderland side sitting bottom of the Championship and seemingly heading into League Two, as reported by the Daily Record.
