Marco Silva has been appointed as the new manager of Premier League outfit Everton – and he reportedly wants Carvalho to join him at Goodison Park.
Sam Allardyce will always look back on his spell at Everton and think he did a good job. The Toffees were slipping towards a relegation battle when he took over in November and ended the season in the top half.
But it was the style of football more than the results that quickly made Allardyce plenty of enemies on the Goodison Park terraces. Everton ranked bottom of the Premier League for chances created, shots and shots on target while a number of displays were characterised by disjointed passing and an overly conservative approach.
Reports in A Bola state that Allardyce’s replacement Marco Silva wants to re-unite with his former Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho, which could be a good indication that Silva is going to bring the style that Everton fans crave.
Unlike Idrissa Gana Gueye or Morgan Schneiderlin, Carvalho is more of a ball player than a ball winner. This is not to say the Portuguese international, who Everton are willing to pay £25 million for, is not adept at the defensive side of the game.
He averaged 1.8 tackles per match in the Primeira Liga for Sporting last season.
But he is also a player who can control a game from midfield, averaging 64 passes per game in 2017/18 with an impressive 88 per cent completion. That figure rises to 91 per cent in Europe.
Everton’s Director of Football Marcel Brands says Silva was chosen for his commitment to ‘attractive, attacking football’. And Carvalho is the sort of player that could bring some much needed style to the blue half of Merseyside.
