Sunderland have been linked with a raid on League One competitors Peterborough United to bring defender Jack Baldwin to the Stadium of Light.

Almost a month ago, The Chronicle reported that Sunderland were leading the chase to sign Jack Baldwin and were confident of bringing the Peterborough United defender to the Stadium of Light.
In the last few weeks, however, links with the 24-year-old have grown somewhat cold despite reports that he could be available for as little as £250,000 in this summer’s transfer window.
But that does not mean that any deal is dead in the water. Speaking on the Roker Report podcast, Black Cats chairman Stewart Donald has indeed confirmed that Baldwin is on Sunderland’s radar – but he is not the only defender they’re targeting.
“He’s on the list,” said Donald when it was asked of him whether Sunderland were interested in Baldwin.
“There’s about 10 defenders on the list. Jack (Ross) will have them in order and we’ll work through them. He’s a name on the list.
“Without going into two much detail, the view is we need two centre-halves and his has been put forward as one of them.”

Sunderland have lost John O’Shea and Marc Wilson already this summer, while Papy Djilobodji and Lamine Kone are surely heading for the exit, meaning Jack Ross is a little short of options at centre-back.
Baldwin, meanwhile, is an experienced League One defender and knows the north east well to boot. He spent three years at Hartlepool United between 2011 and 2014.
