Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly wanted to bring Guedes to the Premier League before he returned to La Liga outfit Valencia from PSG.
Goncalo Guedes exploded onto the world stage last season. During a season on loan at Valencia, the winger scored six goals and produced 11 assists and was compared to compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo as Los Che sealed a dramatic return to the Champions League.
And with Guedes represented by a certain Jorge Mendes, it was no surprise when Wolverhampton Wanderers were linked.
According to L’Equipe, Wolves wanted to bring the PSG forward to Molineux – despite a £53 million price-tag that would have made him comfortably the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
Instead, however, Guedes returned to the Mestalla, signing for Valencia on a permanent basis. And you have to wonder whether Wolves have dodged a £53 million bullet.
Because Guedes’s second season in Spain has been nothing like his first. Injuries have taken their toll but there’s still no real excuse for a tally of one assist, and zero goals, in 18 appearances across all competitions.
The former Benfica wonder kid has looked a shadow of his former self and produced another hugely disappointing performance in the Europa League victory against Celtic on Thursday night.
Valencia won 1-0, and 3-0 on aggregate, but Guedes failed to make any sort an impression, giving the ball away time and time again and spending more time on the floor than he did flying forwards with the ball at his feet.
Time is on Guedes’s side but it seems that he is already at a career crossroads.
