It is like he has never been away; Aberdeen snapped up Niall McGinn in December but Scottish Premiership rivals Rangers did not make a move.
It speaks volumes about Scott McKenna’s thunderbolt against Kilmarnock that Niall McGinn’s sensational individual goal in the same game only came third in the SPFL Goal of the Month awards.
But since the Northern Irish winger sealed his return to Pittodrie in December after that ill-fated spell in Korea, there arguably has not been a better player in Scotland’s top flight.
In four games, McGinn has either scored or assisted six goals, inspiring Derek McInnes’s Dons to wins against Killie, Ross County and Hamilton Academical.
So the question must be asked: Did Rangers drop the ball when failing to make a move for McGinn just before the turn of the year?
As reported by the Irish Sun, the Gers were keen to take the former Celtic winger during the summer when his contract at Aberdeen expired. But McGinn, to his credit, wanted to broaden his horizons and felt a radical switch to Korea would do that more than a three-hour trip from Aberdeen to Glasgow.
It was obvious why Rangers wanted McGinn at the time. He has been one of the most consistently impressive attackers in Scotland over the last few years and hit double figures in four of his five seasons at Pittodrie.
And his brilliant form since moving back to Scotland proves that he has still got it at the age of 30.
Providing a goal or an assist every 45 minutes in the last month, McGinn would have added a real spark of creativity and skill to a Rangers attack that continues to have far too many off days for the fans’ liking.
