Aston Villa want to sign Josh Onomah permanently from Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur, but Midlands rivals Wolves could pose a problem.
Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce will have to wait until the end of the season to discover whether he can sign Josh Onomah on a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur.
The England youth midfielder has made an impressive impact on loan at Villa Park this season and Bruce did not exactly play down suggestions that he wanted Onomah to stay at the club on a full-time basis. He wants to, in his own words, ‘break the bank’ for the tricky midfielder, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.
At the moment, however, Aston Villa simply do not have the funds to tempt Spurs into a sale. Although they could be aided in their pursuit come the end of the season, depending on where James Maddison ends up.
According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in adding Norwich City’s 21-year-old playmaker to an exciting crop of homegrown talents in North London. Maddison, statistically the Championship’s most creative player with 2.6 key passes per game, only made his Norwich debut in April but has been their star man ever since.
And if Maddison does choose Spurs over fellow suitors Liverpool, this would be a major blow to Onomah’s hopes of establishing himself in Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield in the foreseeable future.
But if second tier champions-elect Wolves win the race for Maddison, the Express and Star claiming that he is on their wish list, and this may have ramifications for Villa’s hopes of landing Onomah permanently.
If Nuno’s side add the set-piece specialist to their formidable squad, there may be a higher chance that Onomah will have an opportunity to make an impression at Spurs next season.
Bruce will be praying Tottenham win the race then, and potentially replace one highly-rated England youngster with another.
