Jack Ross’s Sunderland are reported to be keen on signing Lewis Morgan on loan from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

Sunderland fans react during the Sky Bet Championship match between Sunderland and Burton Albion at Stadium of Light on April 21, 2018 in Sunderland, England.

As any Sunderland supporter will tell you, watching the Black Cats has been like pulling teeth in the last two seasons as the club plummeted from the Premier League to League One in just 12 months.

And it is not just the goalkeeping calamities, the array of overpaid and uninterested players or the series of ill-fitting or baffled managers. Add to this a complete lack of cutting edge in the final third and you will understand why the crowds at the Stadium of Light were getting smaller by the week.

Sunderland scored just 52 goals as they finished bottom of the Championship last season, with attacking additions like Aiden McGeady, Jonny Williams and Callum McManaman (below) failing to make the required impact despite no lack of experience or quality.

Fortunately, the Black Cats are taking steps to remedy this issue, and new manager Jack Ross could be key.

The Scottish Sun state that Sunderland want to sign Lewis Morgan on loan from Celtic. And Ross knows the 21-year-old well, having managed him at St Mirren last season before he headed off to Glasgow in a £300,000 deal.

Morgan was named the Player of the Season as St Mirren stormed to the Scottish Championship title, scoring 18 goals and setting up another 13 in all competitions.

A deal for Morgan is far from certain, given that the Scotland international has stated that he wants to force his way into Brendan Rodgers’ first-team plans.

But if Ross can tempt Morgan into a reunion on Wearside, Sunderland will have the sort of creative talent that could fire them out of League One.
