Rangers will reportedly bring Allan McGregor back to Ibrox from Hull City but could then see Jak Alnwick depart the Scottish Premiership.

Allan McGregor of Rangers celebrates after Maurice Edu scored during the Scottish Premier League match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox stadium on February 28, 2010 in Glasgow, Scotland.

With Allan McGregor set to complete his emotional return to Ibrox this summer when his contract at Hull City expires, it was always expected that one of the goalkeepers already on Rangers’ books would have to be sacrificed.

The Scottish Sun reported that Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday were hopeful of luring Rangers’ current number one Wes Foderingham. But then the former Swindon Town goalkeeper took to Twitter to reassure fans that he would not be on his way.

Wes Foderingham of Rangers looks on during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers FC and Celtic FC at Ibrox Stadium on September 23, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

So that leaves Jak Alnwick staring at the exit door, just a year and a half after he joined from Port Vale for £250,000.

The one-time Newcastle United youngster has never really managed to challenge Foderingham for a first-team spot. Alnwick will make just his third league appearance for Rangers in 13 months away to Celtic on Sunday, although that is because Foderingham will miss the rest of the season through injury.

And the Express reports that Alnwick will quit Ibrox this summer, having grown understandably frustrated with his lack of starts for the Glasgow giants.

Cedric Kipre of Motherwell has his shot saved well by Jak Alnwick of Rangers during the Betfred Cup Semi Final at Hampden Park on October 22, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

But Rangers fans seem a little dumbfounded. After all, Alnwick has barely been given a chance to prove himself at Ibrox and it must be said that, when he has made the odd appearance in cup competitions, he has barely put a foot wrong.
