Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly want Benfica’s Pizzi but Premier League rivals Newcastle United should be keen, too.
We may be only halfway through September but Rafa Benitez is already putting his plans in place for the January transfer window. That is according to the Chronicle, which claims the Spaniard is hoping to fill a few gaps in his mismatched Newcastle United squad.
A midfielder is understood to be priority, with Benitez having tried and failed to sign a natural number ten during the last couple of transfer windows. Despite links with countless play-makers, Newcastle are still lacking a creative central midfielder capable of getting the best out of the club’s strikers.
But Pizzi could be the answer to their problems.
The 28-year-old has made a stunning start to the season with Benfica, scoring six goals in just eight games. That is as many as he managed in the whole of 2017/18, when he also produced an impressive 12 assists.
According to Record, Wolverhampton Wanderers could make a move to bring Pizzi to Molineux in January. Given that the former Atletico Madrid man is a Jorge Mendes client, and has a number of compatriots already at Wolves, the move appears to make sense on paper.
But Newcastle are arguably in greater need of a player with Pizzi’s vision and eye for goal. If Mike Ashley is willing to hand Benitez some much needed funds, he should be right at the top of Newcastle’s wish list if Benfica are willing to listen to offers.
