Jack Marriott won’t be joining Sunderland from League One Peterborough United – but Bradford City striker Charlie Wyke may be within budget.
Jack Marriott is not the only League One striker in demand this month.
Although the Bantams targetman cannot boast the 23 goals that Marriott has plundered at Peterborough United this term, he has an impressive 12 goals in the third tier of English football. And Sky Sports add that Wyke could cost just £1 million – a decent fee for a striker who looks like he deserves a chance at playing football at a higher level.
And if Sunderland can raise enough funds to meet Bradford’s asking price, the Middlesbrough-born forward could be the sort of signing they need to steer clear of the drop zone in the second half of the season.
Sunderland have already been looking in League One for attacking reinforcements, with The Mail reporting in December that they had been impressed by Marriott’s stunning form at London Road.
Since then, however, the former Luton Town striker has gone from strength to strength and added a few more pounds to any transfer fee, especially after scoring twice as Peterborough defeated Aston Villa 3-1 away from home in the FA Cup third round.
The Posh won’t sell Marriott for anything other than £6 million or above this summer, per The Express, And Wyke is an absolute steal by comparison. He is also essentially a more affordable alternative to Bolton Wanderers powerhouse Gary Madine, who the Sunderland Echo claimed last month was one of manager Chris Coleman’s top targets.
