Championship title hopefuls Leeds United should seriously consider taking a look at Ayr United’s Lawrence Shankland.
With a 30-goal striker set to become a free agent in just four months, it is no surprise that there is so much interest.
According to the Scottish Sun, Ayr United’s coveted front man Lawrence Shankland is a target for Nottingham Forest and Sunderland while Swansea City had a £200,000 bid rejected during the January transfer window.
And with good reason. Shankland is one of the most in-form forwards anywhere in British football right now with his 30 goals coming in just 30 games, ensuring Ayr are dreaming of a return to the Scottish top flight for the first time since 1978.
So far, Leeds United have not been mentioned in conjunction with the former St Mirren centre-forward but should that change? Quite possibly.
Shankland looks like a natural-born goal-scorer and, while the cynics will doubt whether he can make the step up from the Scottish second tier, Marcelo Bielsa’s ability to improve players beyond recognition suggests that Elland Road could be the perfect environment.
With Patrick Bamford and Kemar Roofe struggling with injuries at various times this season, a new striker would not go amiss in West Yorkshire, regardless of whether Leeds are playing Premier League or Championship football next season.
