Southampton will try to sign striker Paco Alcacer from La Liga leaders Barcelona, if the Saints retain their Premier League status.
Southampton will make a move to sign Barcelona striker Paco Alcacer this summer, according to the Mirror, if Mark Hughes keeps them in the Premier League.
But therein lies the problem. The Saints are currently two points adrift of safety and stuck in the bottom three. Three of their remaining league fixtures will see them go head-to-head with Arsenal, Chelsea and a final day clash with Manchester City.
So that is why Southampton fans believe a deal for Spanish international frontman Alcacer is dead in the water already.
The south coast giants have endured a horrific season and, if Hughes’ debut 3-0 battering at West Ham is anything to go by, the Welshman may struggle to coax enough out of a squad whose confidence appears to be at rock bottom right now.
Southampton were keen to sign Alcacer last summer too and, if they had, they might not find themselves in such a dire situation right now.
The 24-year-old may have started just 18 La Liga games for Barca since his £30 million move from Valencia but he has scored 11 goals in that time, and it would be harsh to criticise him too much for failing to oust either Lionel Messi or Luis Suarez at the Camp Nou.
But if Southampton are not in the Premier League, Alcacer will not be coming to St Mary’s.
