Gillingham’s 13-goal midfielder could earn a move to the Championship – Nottingham Forest are reportedly keen but would he be perfect for Derby County?

Gillingham's Josh Wright

If Nottingham Forest fans wanted their interest justified in Gillingham midfielder Josh Wright, they should take note of his manager. After all, Gills boss Ady Pennock has insisted to Kent Online that he is not surprised his star man has attracted interest from further up the footballing pyramid.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that Wright had caught the eye of newly appointed Forest manager Mark Warburton with the midfielder netting a career best 13 goals since being moved into a more advanced midfield role – though a hat-trick of penalties within the space of just nine minutes against Scunthorpe swelled his tally somewhat.

And Pennock believes it was simply inevitable that Championship clubs would express a desire to pluck Wright from League One.

“I am not surprised if he has got interest from teams above because he has done ever so well,” the manager told Kent Online.

“For a midfield player to score so many goals since January is fantastic and I am sure there will be more interest in him come the end of the season.”

Whether there will be an attempt from Derby County to lure him a few miles across the East Midlands, however, remains to be seen. The Rams are desperately in need of goals from midfield with the likes of Craig Bryson, Will Hughes and Bradley Johnson underperforming in the final third this season.

A player with Wright’s cool head under pressure and dead-eyed finishing could come in handy as manager Gary Rowett aims to build a squad capable of pushing for promotion.

Pennock expects there to be a queue for his signature in the summer but will Forest and Derby duke it out again?
