Despite his success this season should Aston Villa scrap plans to sign Robert Snodgrass permanently from West Ham United if they are promoted?
Robert Snodgrass has been a revelation for Aston Villa this season after joining the club on loan from West Ham United during the summer.
The winger leads the Championship’s assists charts with 13 and has also scored eight goals in the 33 league matches he has played in 2017/18 to help the Villans to fourth in the table currently.
It is perhaps therefore little surprise that as Birmingham Live reports, Villa are desperate to make Snodgrass’ move from the Hammers a permanent one.
Is that the right decision?
This may be a controversial viewpoint, but if Steve Bruce’s men are promoted this term thanks largely to the contribution from Snodgrass, should they then reconsider signing the Scotland international on a permanent basis?
In September the forward will turn 31 and while he has been prolific in the second tier of English football with 31 goals and 41 assists in 137 appearances to date, that hasn’t quite translated to the Premier League.
With Norwich City, Hull City and most recently West Ham, Snodgrass has scored 19 times and provided 13 assists in 103 games – a goal every 5.4 matches and assist every 7.9, in comparison to every 4.4 and 3.3 in the next division down.
At Championship level there are few better than the 30-year-old, but has history shown that he doesn’t really have what it takes to make the step up?
