Joe Mason is on loan at League One Portsmouth from Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers and has made a good start.

The sudden rise of Wolverhampton Wanderers has left a number of players in the lurch. One of those is Joe Mason, who was a regular before Chinese billionaires Fosun International transformed the Molineux club after their 2016 takeover.

A £3 million signing from Cardiff City two years ago, Mason is now one of 28 players who have been loaned out by the Premier League newcomers.

The 27-year-old joined Portsmouth in League One on transfer deadline day, reuniting with the man who brought him to Wolves in the first place – Kenny Jackett.

And Mason, who had a brief spell at Colorado Rapids earlier in the year, made his Pompey debut in the 4-0 Checkatrade Trophy thrashing of Gillingham on Wednesday, coming off the bench for the final half hour at Fratton Park. He made a good first impression, too.

“Speaking to Joe, it was his first full 90 minutes for a while. He played up top by himself. It was a hard role for him but he did well. He worked hard for himself and the team,” Portsmouth first-team coach Jake Wigley told The News.

“Joe created a couple of chances. He probably didn’t get any clear-cut chances himself but was very much involved in the attacking side of our game.

“He is very, very good on the ball. Technically he is very good and he works the channels to open up the game a little bit. His touch is excellent bringing people into play and very much the focal point of our attacking football.”

Mason will be hoping to make his full debut against high-flying Peterborough United at the weekend. And, with a future at Wolves looking unlikely, an impressive loan spell in League One could open plenty of doors for the out-of-favour attacker.
