Zach Clough returned to Bolton Wanderers in January on loan after an ill-fated spell at Championship rivals Nottingham Forest.

Zach Clough’s career has gone off the boil somewhat since he left Bolton Wanderers for Nottingham Forest in January 2017.

Big things were expected of the diminutive £3 million man at the City Ground but Forest manager Mark Warburton failed to get the best out of a player whose subtle skill set makes him something of an enigma at Championship level.

And even a loan return to Bolton three months ago has not managed to give Clough a new lease of life. He has started just two of his eight Championship games under Phil Parkinson and hasn’t actually been seen in the first XI since he scored the winner in a victory over Sunderland back in February.

Worryingly, Clough was even dropped to the U23s recently and omitted from the matchday squad as Bolton drew 2-2 away at relegation rivals Barnsley on Saturday.

As reported by the Nottingham Post, Parkinson pointed out that Clough, like fellow Forest loanee Tyler Walker, had no god given right to be guaranteed a place in the 18-man squad if his performances didn’t warrant it.

A number of Bolton fans have been very frustrated with Parkinson for failing to find a place for their most naturally gifted player, particularly with goals in short supply at the Macron.

But if Clough wanted to prove a point to Forest, this feels like a missed opportunity.
