Wayne Rooney was the most high profile victim as Premier League outfit Everton embarked on a major cull. But he’s finding form in the MLS for DC United.

You’d have been forgiven for thinking you’d been transported back to 2004 when Wayne Rooney rolled back the years with a quite remarkable assist in DC United’s dramatic 3-2 win against Orlando City on Sunday night.

The score was level in the 95th minute with Orlando haring towards the hosts’ goal in search of a last-gasp winner. Until Rooney came storming back like a rocket-fuelled bull, seizing the ball with a crunching challenge before storming up the other end and producing a pin-point diagonal pass.

Luciano Acosta headed the ball home to spark wild celebrations but this goal was all about Rooney – the 32-year-old’s breakthrough moment after a rather inauspicious start to life across the Atlantic.

The former England captain is all the rage in the US capital right now but there has been no shortage of Everton fans taking to Twitter to laud their former number ten.

Rooney left Goodison Park for the second time this summer, being forced out after being told he was not part of Marco Silva’s plans just one year after sealing an emotional return to Merseyside from Manchester United.

And while Everton fans were divided on Rooney’s departure, you’d need a heart of stone not to commend him for this marvellous effort.
