Pep Guardiola will turn this around. But social media is dining out on City’s five game winless streak for as long as it can.
In case you hadn’t heard, Pep Guardiola has gone five games without a win in charge of Manchester City. And, as Southampton deservedly scribed their name next to Celtic, Tottenham, Everton and Barcelona, the hyperbole inevitably exploded through the roof.
‘Pep’s a fraud’, the world screamed. The game’s over Guardiola. The jig is up. 21 trophies in seven years isn’t enough for us in the self-proclaimed ‘Best League in the World’. You may be able to beat Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United in two Champions League finals in three years but a home draw with Southampton? No, that is beyond reproach.
Of course, for the level-headed among us, City’s winless run is merely a bump in the road. The remarkable sequence of victories that followed Guardiola’s arrival proves that there is much more to come, even if City have demonstrated a worrying inability to break down tight-knit defences in recent weeks.
Although, if it’s level-headed opinions you’re looking for, Twitter is probably not the best place to check. For the most part anyway.
