Timo Werner’s sensational Bundesliga form for RB Leipzig has attracted interest from the Premier League, but should Tottenham make a move?
Rapid pace, electric finishing and an appetite for the big occasion, Timo Werner has everything required to be Germany’s next great goalscorer.
But it seems unlikely that he will fulfil his world class potential at RB Leipzig. The Bundesliga flyers have been dining on Werner’s goals for two seasons now and, although he is hardly angling for a move away, Leipzig will face a serious challenge holding onto him this summer.
According to the usually reliable Bild, Liverpool would have to pay a staggering £88 million move for the 22-year-old, who has evolved from a quick-footed winger to a ravenous centre-forward since moving from Stuttgart to Leipzig in 2016.
In 49 Bundesliga games for Ralf Hasenhuttl’s side, Werner has scored 32 goals and even netted the winner against Bayern Munich before the international break.
But Liverpool are not the only Premier League side to have been linked with Werner. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has been watching him since 2015 back when he was at Stuttgart, and the striker even name-checked Spurs when discussing future moves to Bild back in September.
But with a starting price of £88 million, Tottenham would have to not only break their transfer record but obliterate it.
The £42.5 million fee paid for Davinson Sanchez last summer would need to be doubled to compete the big-spending Liverpool. This would require Daniel Levy to make a bid unlike any he has ever made before.
Though if Spurs can somehow finance a move for the brilliant young talent, he could prove to be worth every penny in today’s market. Werner is one of the most promising forwards in world football and has the versatility to play alongside Harry Kane, rather than sit on the bench and wait for his chance a la Fernando Llorente.
An axis of Werner and Kane would give Tottenham one of the most feared forward lines in the game while potentially helping them make that next, substantial step both at home and abroad.
The question, however, is whether that £88 million price-tag puts him out of their reach.
