Scottish Premiership champions Celtic will have to bat away offers for Ajer with Premier League trio Tottenham Hotspur, Southampton and Watford all linked.
Many of Celtic’s centre-backs are facing uncertain futures at Parkhead right now.
Jozo Simunovic has been a shadow of the defender who shone in last season’s treble-winning campaign and the Mail claimed in January thattoops would sell if they received an offer of £7 million.
And the error-prone Dedryck Boyata is out of contract in 12 months with no sign of an extension on the horizon. Erik Sviatchenko, meanwhile, could perhaps have already played his last game for the club after being shunted out on loan to FC Mitdjylland in January.
So, amid all this potential change and upheaval, the prospect of Kristoffer Ajer being lured away from Parkhead this summer does not bare thinking about.
Composed in possession and blessed with intelligence beyond his years, Ajer is exactly the kind of promising young talent that has thrived at Tottenham under Mauricio Pochettino, although German giants Borussia Dortmund are understood to be leading the chase right now.
But if Celtic want to part with Simunovic or Boyata in the near future, their plans could be thrown well out off kilter if they receive an offer they simply cannot refuse for Ajer. TEAMtalk claims they stand to make a huge profit for a defender they signed for £500,000 in 2016.
The timing of Ajer’s potential exit could hardly be worse.
