The French forward has comfortably outscored Tottenham Hotspur’s marquee summer signing.
While the trials, toils and tribulations of Vincent Janssen have filled many a column inch over the last few months, much of the talk has turned to who Tottenham Hotspur should have signed instead.
Michy Batshuayi, Chelsea’s £33 million centre-forward, as reported by The Guardian, has been frequently portrayed as ‘the one that got away’ although his tally of no Premier League starts in almost eight months does not exactly suggest that he would set the world alight a few miles across the capital.
Yet maybe Spurs could have saved themselves a whole lot of money if they had glanced across the Channel.
The Sun reported back in January that the White Hart Lane chiefs had been tracking the progress of Toulouse striker Wissam Ben Yedder, the diminutive front man flying under the radar in a relegation threatened team.
Yet a remarkable tally of 23 goals 41 games by the end of the season apparently was not enough to tempt Tottenham into a summer move despite reports in France suggesting they had retained their initial interest.
Instead, the 5ft 7ins forward swapped South Western France for Sevilla for around a third of the price Spurs splurged on Janssen.
And while the misfiring Dutchman is still yet to score from open pay, Ben Yedder has hit the net 15 times in 25 games in all competitions, turning the Andalusians from nearly-men to title chasers; Europa League favourites to Champions League hopefuls.
Money does not always buy you success, nor does it guarantee you the best striker for your system. On the other hand Ben Yedder, a quick, incisive forward with a subtle touch and emphatic finish, now appears the ideal Tottenham striker.
